Get a truck, hire drivers and give them a cheap truck. Drive contracts until you can afford the next one, repeat. Also buy some garages to place your drivers in. This is why I no longer play with default economy. Pointless and boring. No risk by speeding or running red lights as the tickets you get are pocket change. Damaging truck and or load is also not a big deal as you still make plenty of money. Try an economy mod and earn at most a 10th of the default and you've actually got to pay attention.
If you have hired drivers, check their income. That might be where your money went. To get out of debt, could just take a couple loans to get it down, then take 2 big jobs and you'll be set. The only economy change has been that hired drivers initially had negative income for 1.39 due to new trailers or something.

When I first got the game I used a keyboard and mouse, tried out the mouse steering but could never get the hang of it, and eventually started MFP0.
